I’ve been listening to 90s music again these past years, and I think it was the best era of music. It was the rise of great hip-hop icons such as Snoop Dogg, Tupac, Biggie Smalls. You want R&B? Come and try Aaliyah, Seal, Mariah Carey. It was also the era when many bands from the 80s shifted their style of music as Metallica did. And the best part of the 90s, GRUNGE!!! Great grunge bands such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and many more! The song I’m going to talk about today is also from a grunge band. Some people call it “post-grunge,” but I guess we can call it grunge too. The band is Bush, and this track came from their debut album “Sixteen Stone”, Glycerine.

Calm down for all of you who think that rock kinds of music are just a bunch of noises. This song got no drum. The music only consists of electric guitar and strings because this is a sad song. This song tells a story about Gavin Rossdale’s relationship with his girlfriend at the time, a model named Jasmine Lewis. He dated her for about five years before their breakup, which was caused by busy schedules that kept them apart. From the relationship, he learned that time does go fast when you’re enjoying it. Also, this song tells us to value our relationships while they last, like the chorus said.

Don’t let the days go by
Could’ve been easier on you
I couldn’t change though I wanted to
It should have been easier by three
Our old friend fear and you and me
Glycerine, Glycerine

He made a mistake, and I could hear his regret in how he sang this part. He could’ve been easier, and he wants to change how he acts towards her, but he can’t seem to make himself. He could’ve done better as he was scared to lose her.

I’m never alone, I’m alone all the time
Are you at one? Or do you lie?
We live in a wheel where everyone steals
But when we rise, it’s like strawberry fields
I treated you bad, you bruise my face
Couldn’t love you more, you’ve got a beautiful taste

He said he was never alone, but he was alone all the time. I think it means he had many people around him but not her. The absence of her made him feel alone all the time. He was asking the person whom this song is directed, if they are happy for real or if they are lying and don’t feel there is anyone they are close to. How he wrote these lyrics really reflects his regret for what he did to her.

I have a conclusion that Glycerine in this title represents love. I found out that glycerine is another writing of glycerin. Glycerine is most commonly used for medicines that treat burns. It is a clear, odorless, tasteless substance. Also, glycerine itself absorbs water from the surrounding environment, and it can be made in to nitroglycerin, which is used in both explosives and heart medication. Or simply: Glycerine is something that can either heal or destroy. That is the same for love. In some time, love can be the cause of your explosion, your fight with someone, your wounds, and other source of chaos. But at the same time, love is also your medicine. Love can heal your wounds, love can end your fight, and you can forgive someone with love.

In the end, I think everybody should listen to this song because this is one of many reasons why you should keep believing in love. Love may be the cause of your sorrow, but it also heals.
